Account of editing week 4
Now that i have finished cutting the shots together we have to start after effects on the video. We shot the band on a green screen we are going to use chromo-keying in order to put in wallpaper and flooring. This is done by masking out the band members making the green disappear, we did this by using the software caled "key light". I then changed the saturation of this layer in order to make the band appear in black and white. I then added in the floor and wallpaper to the shot as a different layer. We found the wallpaper by looking on an online home-wear store and copying a screen shot of some wallpapers and seeing which one works best with the theme of the old basement. The wallpaper screen shot was then made into a tile format in order for it to look more realistic. The floor tiles were found and made in the same way except when they were keyed into the shot they had to put at a specific angle in order to make sure that it looked flat and that it looked like the band was standing on it. I also added an omnilight to the middle of the shot in order to light the wallpaper and flooring layer which made it look more realistic. The next step was to add the layer of coloured rain in front of the shot. The rain was shot at night so the background is black with the rain being lit by coloured gels over lighting. To make the colours better and brighter i changed the hue in order to place the rain over the shot, i used the blending tool so that the black would become transparent. This sequence had to be repeated for every shot so it took a long time to do. The effect we wanted to use was to have colours to start coming back into the shot at the end of the pomo but this meant having another two layers. I got the rain water splatter effect from the animation library. I then placed this over the shot and used a blending tool to make the white in the middle of the splatter transparent showing the band in colour underneath. I then used another blending tool in order to make the black around the splatter transparent this time however revealing the black and grey layer.

Now i had to cut between the shots to make an interesting visual experience for the audience, this means switching from concept and performance shots to keep the audience watching. As "Now is eveyone" is a new band we had to put more performance shots in than concept shots, this is so that the audience can begin to recognise the members and the roles they play in the band. I put some extreme close ups on their instruments so that the audience can see the band really playing so they know it is not auto tuned and it shows their talent and skill. This week i also need to tighten up the shots making the cuts quicker and adding in some extra shots in order to make it visually interesting for the audience.

The next step of editing was to sync up the long shots so we could intercut between these to make it fit in with in order to make the video have a mix of performance and concept shots. This was done by listing the shot and placing a marker on a specific bit that we wanted and we dragged the shot onto the time line and levelled up the markers so it was in time. I also had to make sure that i disabled the sound on the shot when it was on the timeline otherwise it would cut in with the original song, this was done by just putting the shot on mute. Next i had to place the markers on the song at specific beats in the tune to know when to cut the shot in so it would keep the same rhythm.

We used final cut pro to edit our promo. I used this programme before whilst editing our thriller so i was familiar with it already. I filmed the promo on Mpeg 2 NX5 cameras which have a hard disk which means that when we pause the camera it would save as a different shot, this also enabled us to upload the shots faster onto the computer compared to our thriller. Once the film was on the programme i had to sort out the shots into bins so that it is more organized and easier to find which shot you need, i labeled the bins head shots, wide shots of performance, concept shots, puddle shots etc. Next i had to place the sound track onto the time line to match the shots with the music. We had a slight problem with the song we had as it was not compatible for the programme so we had to convert it to a WAP file to work.
Task 2-How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts?
According to Richard Dyers theory, star image is constructed from a range of materials. In order to construct my bands ‘star image’ I also used a range of materials this included the Pop promo itself, a digi pack and a poster. The theorist Richard Dyer says a star is an image not a real person that is constructed out of a range of materials.
The main concept that makes "Now is everyone" unique is that it is an organic band so they put themselves together by meeting through school and not by using a record company which means they have a closer relationship. Another reason how they are organic is their lyrics and music, if bands are signed to a record company sometimes they have people make up their songs but the band make up their own lyrics about things that mean something to them. The location we chose emphasized their organic concept as Guildford is their local area where they live so it shows that they are just like other everyday people shown by them walking thorugh Guildford area which the audience can recognize and relate themselves to. There have been famous bands that have made the location where they shoot their video where they come from such as The Beatles from Abbey road and the Smiths in Manchester.
It is not only the video that makes them organic but also the other materials such as the digi pack where we made up a collage of photos from the shoot day but also they sent us some from their private life which makes them seem more normal and connected with the normal people in society. The other material which is the poster also shows the organic theme when we took a picture of them in an alleyway in Guildford, this shows that the band start off a small unknown band which has a low profit, however this also shows that the band will start off low and will then become famous stars and will eventually have a high profit poster which really emphasises their talent.
Another way we have shown that the band is organic is in the wide shot which introduces them as a band, the shot is in what looks like a dark room with dull colours showing that it is an eerie room. This portrays again that they are low profit and cannot afford a big studio to perform in.
Other than the organic theme there is also the theme that they are talented in their music which we have shown using close ups of them playing their instruments which seem worn so that means that they play a lot. It also shows that they have toured with them as on their case they had stickers for Guildfest a festival for local Guildford people. Also in their digi pack there are pictures of themyplaying at gigs and parties etc.

The band is also youthful as they are young (17/18) and they have reached having a music video and playing at gigs already which makes them inspirational for other upcoming bands. We have shown their youth through how we represent them with their clothes and hair strongly representing indie rock genre. This then enables the target audience to relate to them if they wear the same clothes or have a similar hairstyle.
The band also represent a sexual magnetism as they would be appealing to their target audience which could be a reason why girls are fans of the band as they see them as "attractive". To make this seen in the video we made the band seem quite distant from the audience as this makes the girls want the band more as they are far away, we did this by not getting the band to look at the camera and making the cut jump cut before they get too close to the camera. Also shown in the poster as a "rebellion" look as the band standing up against the wall which is known to attract the girls to an unruly man. According to Richard Dyer's star image theory rebellion can create a "star".
"Now is everyone" is a very competitive genre of music for young artists. To portray the fact that they are succeeding we used the special effect of having the band in black and white and then having them come into colour as this is something not many bands do for their music video so it makes the band stand out more in the competition.
